A historic place, Monemvasia with its imposing rock and its famous medieval castle state is one of the most important tourist destinations in the country.

The settlement of Monemvasia was founded by Lacedaemonians in the 6th century. A.D. and gradually evolved into a city.
The strategic position, the powerful fleet, the renowned products, the important personalities that emerged, as well as the favor shown to it by the Byzantine emperors with their golden bull, made the Monemvasia “Periwnymon asty”.
After a brief papal occupation, the city fell into the dominion of the Venetians (1464).
Followed by periods of Turkish and Venetian occupation, until Monemvasia was liberated (1821), first among the fortified cities of the Peloponnese.
Opposite the Rock of Monemvasia is the bridge Modern tourist center, port for fishing and excursion boats.
